Judge scolds ex-gov Turaki for evading trial for six years

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama, Abuja on Thursday granted bail to a former governor of Jigawa State, Saminu Turaki, who was arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja on July 4.

Justice Yusuf Halilu granted him bail on conditions which merely required the former governor to submit his travelling documents to the registry of the court, produce “two reasonable sureties”  residing in Abuja, and sign a register to be opened at the EFCC’s office every two weeks.

The court, which scolded Turaki for failing to submit himself for trial on charges filed against him before the Federal High Court in Dutse,  Jigawa State, since six years ago, said the sureties to be presented by the former governor must have “verifiable means of livelihood.”
